1st Generation Toyota Sequoia – A New Era for Toyota SUVs in America
The Toyota Sequoia was first introduced for the 2001 model year, based on the first-generation Tundra pickup truck.
It marked a significant milestone as the first large SUV produced by Toyota in North America, assembled at the Toyota TMMI plant in Princeton, Indiana.
Designed to compete with American giants
Toyota chief designer Kaoru Hosegawa developed the Sequoia to compete with American giants such as the Ford
Expedition and Chevy Tahoe – two of the most popular large SUVs at the time. Toyota clearly intended to establish itself in the American large SUV market.
Development timeline and design origins
In 1995, Toyota began exploring options for a replacement for the T100 pickup truck. Given the growing demand for large SUVs in the USA, Toyota saw an opportunity. By 1997, designer Toshihiko Shirasawa had completed the exterior of what would later become the 1st generation Toyota Sequoia, and a patent was filed in April 1998. Built on the Toyota Tundra chassis, the Sequoia shares the engine, dashboard, bodywork, and chassis with the first generation Toyota Tundra, with a few notable differences: Unique rear 1/3 body, rear disc brakes, Multi-link rear suspension with solid axle (as opposed to the Tundra’s leaf springs). Performance Specifications: Drivetrain and Handling Legendary 4.7L V8 Engine – At launch, the Sequoia was powered by Toyota’s proven 240 horsepower 4.7L V8 engine, which was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. This engine, shared with the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series, was known for its bulletproof reliability.
